During the Chinatown tour, our group only paused at the 'Journey to the West' mural. However, there are many more stunning murals around the area. These murals do more than just represent and beautify the community; they are important narrators of our cultural practices, beliefs, and spirit—layers of meaning that cannot be captured in a mere glance. I retraced my route, feeling a connection to the epic 'Journey to the West,' and cataloged 14 distinct murals.
During my exploration, I realized that many murals from a decade ago had vanished, and very few records were available online. This realization provoked me to start documenting these works. I pixelated all the murals, reducing them to recognizable color blocks, thereby challenging visitors to identify each mural independently. To help with this, I created a foldable booklet titled 'Mural Hunt,' designed as an add-on to the existing tourist system and a documentary for the mural. The mural journey begins at the famous Dragon Gate, which features elements widely recognized and beloved by the public, such as dragons and iconic figures like Bruce Lee. It then transitions to scenes depicting community activists, capturing Chinatown's vibrant life and cultural festivals. The narrative further deepens as it portrays resident stories, revealing hidden aspects of poverty and housing conditions within the community. This progression reflects the complex layers of history and life in Chinatown.
To further develop this project, I reconnected with a high school friend who now works with a nonprofit organization in Chinatown, CCDC. I sent her the mural-documented photos and the booklet. But the first thing she said was, "Welcome home."
